State of Emergency in Honduras Extended Until Next October

The deputy commissioner of the National Police, Edgardo Barahona, indicated that the measure will be extended to 158 municipalities.

The authorities of the Honduran Secretary of Security announced this Wednesday an extension of the state of emergency until October 6, when a reduction in the homicide rate of 17.5 percent is registered.

According to official sources, between January and June of this year, 1,861 violent deaths were reported, while in the same period of 2022, 2,225 murders were recorded.

The deputy commissioner of the National Police, Edgardo Barahona, indicated that the emergency regime will be extended to 158 municipalities nationwide until 6:00 p.m. (local time) on October 6.

“We hope that the legal measure that has given positive results in the contraction of the crime rate in the country can continue to have a decrease in violent deaths,” he said.

In turn, the head of the Secretary of Security, Gustavo Sánchez, indicated that the rates of violence “have decreased significantly, thanks to the state of exception that will probably continue to spread.”

“We are going to continue making arrests and dismantling criminal structures, which is a great challenge, but the people deserve it,” added the Honduran official.

The Government of the Central American nation implemented the state of emergency on December 6, which has been continuously extended for periods of 45 days.
