Immediately after the final whistle, Aguirre was hit on the head by an object, possibly a beer can, thrown by spectators. Despite bleeding, the 65-year-old coach remained calm, speaking to the Honduran coach before leaving the pitch with security staff’s assistance. Aguirre later downplayed the incident, calling it just part of the game.
The North and Central American Football Association condemned the violence and announced an investigation. The incident has been forwarded to Concacaf’s disciplinary committee for further review. The Mexican Football Federation has already requested Concacaf to take appropriate action in line with regulations.
With Luis Palma’s two goals, Honduras holds a strong advantage going into the second leg, which will take place on Tuesday in Toluca, Mexico. Mexico now faces the challenge of overcoming the deficit in their home country to stay in the competition.
Javier Aguirre, who began his third term as Mexico’s national coach in July, is preparing to lead the team to the 2026 World Cup. Mexico will co-host the tournament with the USA and Canada, and Aguirre’s leadership will be vital for their success in the competition.
