El Salvador Edge Honduras to Remain Atop Group B


El Salvador continued its stay at the top of Group B in League B with a 1-0 victory over Honduras as the Road to the 2024 W Gold Cup continued Thursday at the Chelato Uclés Stadium in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

El Salvador’s Danielle Fuentes had eyes for the goal early with a shot from distance in the 5’, but Honduras GK Madeline Nieto put a stop to any danger.

Nieto had a busy day in goal as she was challenged with another on-target attempt in the 10’, this time from Victoria SanchezSamaria Gomez had a good look of her own in the 27’ but Nieto just kept capturing the attempts.

Brenda Ceren was denied by the woodwork in the 47’, as El Salvador continued to break the Honduran defense into the second half.

Lesbia Puerto of Honduras nearly added to her tournament tally in the 52’ but her free kick attempt was just over the mark.

Danielle Fuentes finally got past Nieto in the 57’ with a shot from distance in what would end up being the match-winning goal.

Gomez tried her luck again in the 70’ and Victoria Sanchez had a look from mid-range in the 85’, but Nieto would not concede again. The Honduran goalkeeper ended the night with seven saves.

El Salvador remains undefeated with a 3-0-0 record and 9 points. Honduras, Martinique, and Nicaragua round out Group B in that order.
