Nogales, Sonora, Mexico – – Rising Creighton junior Norah Sis helped the USA Volleyball Under-21 National Team to a Group B title with a 3-0 win over Costa Rica on Friday morning at the U21 Women’s NORCECA Pan American Cup. The US needed just 53 minutes to finish off the 25-11, 25-8, 25-9 sweep.
For the first time in eight career matches wearing national team colors, Sis played as a reserve. She checked in with the US up 14-4 in the second set and slammed kills on two of the next three points (15-4 and 16-5), then added to her totals with kills to make it 19-5 and 24-6. She contributed two more kills in the final frame.
For the day, Sis had a kill on all six swings and added one dig and one block. She also served twice. For the tournament Sis now owns 19 kills and is hitting .500 in 34 swings. She also has three blocks, one ace and seven digs.
The US owned a 41-14 advantage in kills, 13-1 edge in blocks and owned the only six aces in the contest. The US hit .621 and held Costa Rica to -.083 hitting in the one-sided battle.
Sis and USA Volleyball return to the court on Saturday at 8 p.m. Central against the runner-up from Group A. The identity of that opponent won’t be determined until the completion of pool play on Friday.
“It was very important for us to get this win so we could rest tonight, and it was important to continue to play a lot of players,” Team USA head coach Dan Fisher said. “Going into the playoffs we want to be fresh. We like the challenge that’s ahead of us.”
The 2022 BIG EAST Player of the Year and a two-time BIG EAST Tournament MVP, Sis averaged 4.33 kills per set and 2.51 digs per set for a Creighton team that won the BIG EAST regular-season and Tournament titles. The Papillion, Neb., product has been named an AVCA All-American following each of her previous two seasons as a Bluejay, during which time Creighton is a combined 58-9.
Last summer Sis started all five of Team USA’s matches while helping the U.S. Women’s National Team to the 2022 Pan American Cup gold medal, collecting a combined 30 kills, 24 digs, four blocks and three aces on .286 hitting for the week.
